New Forest (OSD 75-1)
|
The fair-drawn Ordnance Surveyors' Drawings at 3 inches to the mile were intended as manuscript maps in their own right, even if they subsequently served as the basis for the engraved one-inch. For most of them a second copy survives in The National Archives. OSD 75 covers the coast of Hampshire based on a survey of 1797. The copy now in the British Library has been divided into 3 parts. It has been amended to show enclosures of commons, a couple of new roads, and sundry name changes; and it has seen heavy use.
In contrast, the copy presented here (TNA MR 1/406) lacks these amendments and is in pristine condition. For convenience, it was scanned in 3 separate parts, this is the western part covering the New Forest (OSD 75-1).
