231. General Map of Ireland to Accompany the Report of the Railway Commissioners: Sheet 4 (CCSA.CCS_218B_67/4)

The history of the Railway Commissioners map of Ireland, which made is first appearance in April 1839, has been written up in detail in Roger Hellyer and Richard Oliver Ordnance Survey small scale maps, published by the Charles Close Society in 2023. Suffice it here to point to the geology present which caused such controversy in its early years, and to say that the images present here come at a critical stage in its history, being the last known printings of the original map, in July 1852, immediately before the first appearance in August of a new edition which would not be complete until early 1856. It is significant also in being one of the first states to show any revision to the railway system.
