MPHH 1/220(4) - Portsmouth

This plan is in poor condition, and parts have been torn away. However, everything south and east of Cosham is deliberately omitted. There is a fine pencil line east of Portsmouth where all detail suddenly stops. But even to the west of that line land-use ornament seems to be missing, along with some of the finer detail. Southsea Castle, for instance, is shown in outline only and is not named. The rectilinear nature of the omitted area suggests that a recent map was available that could feed into the OSD. East of Emsworth, the OP stops with the built-up area of Prinsted (despite this being in Sussex) and the OSD likewise leaves a blank area south of the main road. Thorney Island (despite being in Sussex) appears on the OSD but is not on the OP. It seems likely that this too was supplied from a suitable source held at Portsmouth. None of this area is hachured on the OSD, but it is so flat that hachures are probably inappropriate.

The plan has been cast at 42,765 acres (bottom right).
