No.8 Hants 83.7.6

This is a WD-only version of Hants 83.7.6.

Once again, we have for comparison the 6-inch index sheet from before these revisions, the 1:2500 generalisation (1) and the 1:500 as printed - https://maps.nls.uk/view/229916058

Walls have been drawn in solid red with colour-wash to show roofed areas. Close to the southern caponniere, an existing block has been refashioned. Close to the northern end of that block, a new "Wash House &c" has been added. When this came to be printed, the "&c" was made explicit: the part projecting into the rampart was now named "Latrine". In contrast, at the other end of the range, the "W.C." added next to the Proof House was left without any description.

Towards Portsmouth Harbour there is a new pier with a Shell Manipulating Building near it. NW of this are two Stores. Note that the name is in black and is printed: the buildings are not new but the walls have been redrawn, probably because the positions of doors have been changed. East of these Stores is the 'D' Powder Magazine. Although on the 1:2500 the name magazine and part of the building are in red, this is because a paste-over has been applied - probably the old position of the name was in the way of the new pier - the 1:500 shows us that the powder magazine remains unchanged. However, whereas formerly there were two tramlines heading south from it, one has been deleted on the 1:500 MS, albeit somewhat imperfectly. Note also the path running diagonally from between the two Stores towards the new Shell Store: the end of this has been deleted and a new pecked line drawn in, though quite what it delineates is unclear. The engraver working on the new 1:500 has been able to distinguish lines that were wanted from imperfect deletions, but he could not improve on the frightful depiction of the new tramlines entering the Shell Store with their impossibly sharp corners.
