Six-inch (1:10,560) London and its environs, sheet 7, with hachures

The ‘skeleton’ map of London was surveyed in 1848-50 for the Metropolitan Commissioners of Sewers. It was published at three scales, at 1:1056 in 847 sheets, at 1:5280 in 44 sheets, and seven years later at 1:10,560 in 15 sheets (sheet 1 was not required), engraved in 26 sections of full, half and quarter sheets. It was an outline map showing only named streets and a few public buildings, canals and the limits of the land required in building railways, The main purpose of the map was to supply altitude information, shown by a multitude of bench marks and spot heights, supported by triangulation points. This is sheet 7, originally published in quarter sheets. This is a late combined copy of the sheet, to which brown hachures have been applied for some unknown purpose.
