No.7 Hants 83.7.1

This is a WD-only version of Hants 83.7.1 with the new 'E' Magazine at Priddy's Hard.

The massive walls of the magazine are shown in carmine wash, the facing walls of the revetment in solid colour, and the fact that the magazine is roofed is not indicated at all. NLS has the printed version: this applies vignetting over the whole area of the magazine to show that it is roofed; the facing walls are uncoloured, and the hachures showing that the earth revetment rises to a crest before falling (with a change of slope) with increasing distance from the magazine are omitted from the printed plan. That printed plan also introduces a name 'Right Demi Bastion' not on the 1:500 MS but which had been added to the 1:2500 MS.

Towards Portsmouth Harbour a new pier has been added, with tramway. The pencil guidelines for 'Pier' can be made out. A previous pier at a different position has been removed and there are now pecked lines which might indicate the deliberate placement of more solid material to stop erosion - but it is remarkably difficult to interpret underwater pecked lines on the 1:500. It is useful to compare the depiction of the tramway at the two scales: the 1:500 shows individual tracks; the 1:2500 generalises it to a single track.
