No.6 Hants 84.9
|
This is a WD-only version of Hants 84.9, hand-coloured, in its 1874 revision.
There is no date, embossed or stamped. It bears a single price, 5s, applicable to the coloured version, suggesting a date no later than 1880. "(For War Department purposes only)" appears bottom-centre, above the price, in a fairly large font. This is an unusual position and might help date the map if any other instances were known. Fort Cumberland and Eastney barracks were deleted from the sales edition - compare the NLS 6-inch at https://maps.nls.uk/view/102343173. That deletion also extended to the wooden circular 'Crinoline church' at Eastney barracks; see https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/photos/item/OP31599.
