No.25 Hants 83.8.21
|
This is a WD-only version of Hants 83.8.21.
Victoria Park (opened 1878) extends under the railway line. The prominent new buildings close to the western edge of the map are greenhouses, but one would not know this without referring to the printed version of the map - https://maps.nls.uk/view/231279459 - where they carry the 'glass-roof' fill. A diamond pattern in red was used for a greenhouse on (18): why not here? In contrast to (24) the urinals are named on the printed sheet as well as the MS; but possibly this is because NLS's printed sheet is a later zincograph. This may also be the reason that the signal posts halfway between the two railway bridges do not appear on the printed map.
The building of St Michael's and All Angels Church (sic) had in 1879 not progressed beyond the nave. At the east end of this are two large columns intended to carry part of the weight of the future tower, and both are shown hollow to allow for newel stairs. The printed map places the name Tower against each of them, which must be a misunderstanding. Immediately south of the church is a pencil note: "Proposed to be sold for Parsonage site" and a date which appears to be 1884. The wording tells us about the interests of the office that kept these maps: what matters is not the parsonage as such but the fact that this will cease to be WD land.
