No.19 Hants 83.11.5

This is a WD-only version of Hants 83.11.5.

It consists almost entirely of land freed for redevelopment by the removal of the eastern Portsea and Portsmouth defences. Already in 1874 the Gymnasium had been built, but now we see that sanitary facilities have been added. Since the road was already there in 1874, one might wonder why 'Burnaby' in the margin is in red; inspection of the 1874 sales version at https://maps.nls.uk/view/231279471 shows that in 1874 it was "Mill Dam Road". Between the Gymnasium and the new Grammar School, the old route across the moat, with two narrow bridges, was still present in 1874. This has been obscured on the MS by a paste-over, which is recognisable by a section of the Ward Boundary (which had not moved) being in red where it runs over the paste-over.

At the western tip of that paste-over is the Landport Gate, of 1760. As late as 1874, it was effectively a tunnel piercing the rampart; it is drawn in 1879 with three windows facing St George's Road on each side of the gateway and, towards the Recreation Ground, an open arcade each side. So had it been made more impressive as a monument between those dates? It is difficult to square the published accounts with the cartographic evidence.
