No.17 Hants 83.7.20
|
This is a WD-only version of Hants 83.7.20, printed September 1879.
It shows development taking place in the space created by clearing away the eastern fortifications of Portsea, notably by the addition of the Infection Hospital to the existing Garrison Hospital. Comparison with the printed sales edition - https://maps.nls.uk/view/231279414- is instructive: each side of the Infection Hospital has a Nurses' Room and a Store named on the printed map which are unnamed on the MS.
A shrubbery has been laid out in front of the Garrison Hospital, presumably for the benefit of patients siiting or wheeled out on the verandah. It is a delightful touch. The red ink is a little blurred; for greater clarity, look at the printed sales edition. The generalisation to the 1:2500 scale (1) is disappointing: what is clearly a garden with lawns looks on the smaller scale more like two rows of trees.
