No.13 Hants 83.11.4
|
This is a WD-only version of Hants 83.11.4.
On this sheet a lot of new space had been created where the old fortifications of Portsea had met the even older fortifications of old Portsmouth. This allowed Ordnance House to be laid out as a grand residence for the Commissary-General. The diamond pattern in the SW room presumably indicates that this is a conservatory. Although the NLS copy of this map - https://maps.nls.uk/view/231279468 - is the sales version, it was not thought necessary to delete Ordnance House, so we see that the conservatory is left unfilled in the engraved style. East of Ordnance House is a massive open Wagon Shed. That too is allowed to appear on the Sales version, and we see the addition of "(Iron)", a further example of the engraver being provided with further instructions on names over and above what appears on the MS additions.
